Theme of the Month (May 2008)

Opera on Tap is beginning to realize, along with everyone else, what it means to live in an empire on the decline. As the dollar tanks and our singers' dreams of performing in Europe take on a manic desperation, OOT brings the uppity imperialists of opera to Freddy's Bar and Backroom. Opera composers want it all, even if it doesn't belong to them i.e. Italians appropriating the whole tone scale and the Wild West. Thankfully less deadly than the governmental policy version, operatic imperialism has given us some amazing material. Come witness the musical effects of vast monarchies, the Catholic church, ancient Rome, really any power-bloated character you can think of, and the little people that suffer and/or triumph in their shadow.
